Dutch architect MVRDV and French firm de Alzua+ have won a competition to re-masterplan Villeneuve d’Ascz, a town in France, beating four other entries.
Dubbed ‘The Beam’ the architects have proposed to place a building that cantilevers over a motorway, aiming to creating a visual reference to the town centre.
Currently only shopping malls are visible from the motorway.
The buildings are designed to be arranged around a series of grassy courtyards, which contain shops, offices, as well as a new hotel.
Parking areas that are currently occupying the site will be relocated underground to free up space for pedestrian pathways.
Construction for the project is set to begin in 2015.
