This year’s Interior Design of the Year: Bars and Clubs winner was Navigate Design for its work on the Weslodge Saloon on the 68th floor of the JW Marriot Marquis in Dubai’s Business Bay.
‘Laid-back and cool’ is the overriding theme of the Weslodge Saloon, which is aimed at giving guests an experience beyond eating and drinking, with vintage art pieces, given a new lease of life after being sourced from antique markets, while a collection of sterling silver, brushed brass and period trinkets hark back to an age of luxury.
After stepping through the Ferrari-yellow coloured door, panoramic windows offer views of the Dubai skyline.
The judges hailed the design as creating a “welcoming environment that makes the guest want to stay for hours” as well as its unexpected combination of colours and textures which creates an extremely sophisticated ambience.
The panel called the saloon “a totally immersive and bright space committed to every detail of the design intent. A well planned and cleverly thought through sequence of space that disguised the ultra-modern floor plate of the building it sits within.”
Ken Lam, principal of Navigate Design, said: “To be honest I am a little surprised to win this award as it is our first project in the Middle East. And to win in Dubai is great as it is such a global design hub. I suppose working closely with the client was the key. Together we designed a home from home.”
