Dutch-based studio OMA has been chosen to masterplan a business and residential development linking Doha with the new Hamad International Airport.
Entitled Airport City, the 10-square kilometre masterplan features four districts along a “green spine” running parallel with the airport’s runways.
This spine of public spaces, including gardens and plazas, will connect the business and logistics district with the aviation district with a residential area adjacent to the new Doha Bay Marina.
Phase one of the 30-year masterplan is scheduled for completion by 2022, at the time when Qatar hosts the FIFA World Cup.
Rem Koolhaas, co-founder, OMA said: “[The project] is perhaps the first serious effort anywhere in the world to interface between an international airport and the city it serves.”
