Rapper Kanye West revealed in an interview on BBC Radio 1 that he is frustrated for not being taken seriously as a “real designer.” He also told of his plans to move into architecture.
The rapper said he wanted to expand this creativity beyond music and fashion and into product design and architecture.
“I want to do product,” West said, “I am a product person. Not just clothing but water bottle design, architecture. I make music but that shouldn’t be limited to one place of creativity.
“I hang around architects mostly,” he revealed.
“I’m learning what I want. This is the reason why I’m working with five architects at a time. The time spent in a bad apartment, I can’t get that back. But the education I can get from working on it is priceless.”
Already established as a fashion designer, West released his Air Yeezy trainers for Nike in 2009 as well as showing his DW Kanye West womenswear collections at Paris Fashion HGH Week.
But the rapper was left disappointed when Nike didn’t extend his trainer line after 2011 regardless of the amount it sold for on eBay.
“I’m so frustrated,” he said. “I got ideas on colour palettes; I’ve got ideas on silhouettes. I’ve got a million people telling me why I can’t do it, that I’m not a real designer.”
He added: “T-shirts, that’s the most we can make. We can have our best perspective on T-shirts but anything else and your Truman Show boat is hitting the wall.”
Early last year, West had announced he was to open his own designer company called DONDA, hoping to get together a group of architects and designers to work with.
West is, however, not the only musician turned designer. Three years ago, rapper Pharrell Williams had a go at furniture design, creating a chair collection called The Tank. American rapper Vanilla Ice also unveiled a collection of lighting designs at the beginning of this year.
