The ancient city of Petra in Jordan was one of the global landmarks which was bathed in blue light to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day, held yesterday (Saturday).
The annual event is staged to raise issues and increase awareness about children with autism throughout the world. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly on November 1, 2007, and adopted on December 18, 2007.
The idea was proposed by the United Nations representative from Qatar, HH Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned of HH Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thanni Emir of Qatar, and supported by all member states.
Other buildings illuminated included sections of the Panama Canal and stores in New York.
