Q&A: Bernard Mouawad discusses Haworth’s presence in the regional marketplace

Tell us about Haworth.

Founded in 1948 by G.W. Haworth in Holland, Michigan, Haworth Inc. has grown into the world’s largest privately held furniture manufacturer with the ability to make critical business decisions in support of our customers’ – not shareholders’ – needs.

We have evolved our business model and continuously reinvested in the company, strengthening our position through strategic solutions, business growth opportunities and service capabilities. In the late 1980s, we started our global expansion through acquisition, which enables us to invest in knowledge and drive innovation.

Globally, Haworth improves workplaces with award-winning furniture, interior architecture and technology solutions to help customers achieve their business goals by supporting collaboration and innovation, as well as contributing to culture transformations. The Haworth Collection includes artfully designed pieces from the Cappellini, Cassina, GAN, Pablo Designs and Poltrona Frau to create inspiring spaces where people feel grounded, invigorated, and empowered.

Research and design are the drivers behind our deep understanding of agile workplace needs and are at the centre of the company’s strategy.

Which projects in the region has Haworth worked on/ which architecture firms have you collaborated with?

Our presence in the Middle East and Africa has spanned the past 25 years, and today, our global network of partnerships as well as the local industry have continued to support us, and we have proudly contributed to major projects throughout the years.

In the Middle East alone, we work closely with Emirates Airlines, Public Authority for Minors Affairs Kuwait, Telecom Regulatory Authority United Arab Emirates (UAE), World Bank, King Abdullah University in Saudi Arabia, General Electric (GE), Procter and Gamble (P&G), LinkedIn and First Abu Dhabi Bank and many more. We’ve also partnered with architects including Perkins + Will, Blue Haus Group, Gensler, HOK and KEO.

Tell us about your company ethos.

Haworth does not give preference to anyone – the playing field is levelled and we consider everyone a partner, regardless of the size or global reach of the company. Working with international architecture and interior design companies, as well as smaller firms from the local industry, reflects our support and commitment to design in all forms.

How does Haworth’s products compare to what else is available on the regional market?

Our office’s regional strategic position has access to the global portfolio, which is not always the case for other similar companies. This position gives us what we would like to call a global exploration of inspiring design and refined craftsmanship. Leveraging tradition and innovation of design from around the world, our portfolio includes many heritage brands offering a diverse range of iconic designs, functionality and aesthetic options.

All of our products can be found at www.haworth.com, and Haworth Middle East and Africa HQ is in Dubai Design District, building 7A, Office 304. Designers and architects are welcome to visit
us anytime.
