Qatar to look at future of labour camps

A committee is being set up to examine current and future needs of labour camps in Qatar.

Proposals for the committee by the country’s Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning were approved by the state cabinet on Wednesday, the state news agency QNA reported.

The committee will aim to examine how labour camps should be designed and managed to cater to the rising influx of foreign workers for Qatar’s busy construction sector in particular.

It will then draw up a strategy for the supply of both temporary and permanent labour accommodation, ensuring it meets the needs of existing state-backed social development programmes, QNA said.

And, because rents have been rising in Qatar, the committee will study rent prices of labour lodgings and submit recommendations to the government for appropriate action.

The committee will be headed by a representative from the Municipal Ministry. Two of its members will be drawn from other ministries concerned with labour welfare.
