Qatari student team win hybrid-electric car competition

The first of its kind, the 2014 TAQA GCC Hybrid-Electric Challenge required almost a dozen different student teams from the region to compete in building a working, sustainable vehicle.

The all-female team of Gernas 114 from Qatar University took home the winning prize after beating out 10 other teams.

Each team was given a basic kit and five months to prepare a hybrid, one-seater car that needed to rely on 1.5 hours of electrical energy as well as 3.8 liters of common fuel.

The 2014 TAQA GCC Hybrid-Electric Challenge is one of the first initiatives in the region to promote sustainable alternatives to fossil-fuels, and with this year’s success, there will likely be a second round next year.
