RTKL recently completed schematic design for Paradise Centre in Sofia, which will be Bulgaria’s largest shopping and leisure destination upon completion in late 2012.
Currently under construction, the 82,500 square-metre lifestyle centre will feature architecture, interior design, environmental graphic design and wayfinding provided by RTKL.
The design was developed to showcase the surrounding landscape and provide a contemporary backdrop for international consumer brands.
The developer, Bulfeld said: “The design concept for Paradise Centre is the synergy between man and nature, which is embodied in the logo of the project, as well as in every detail of the building itself. Paradise Center will be the biggest mall in Bulgaria and one of the most unique of its kind in Europe.”
Located adjacent to current and planned transport links, Paradise Center will connect Sofia’s residential communities south of the downtown area with the commercial heart of the city.
The building’s architecture both references the city and maximises views toward the city’s Vitosha mountains.
Drawing inspiration from the centre’s name, a centrally located atrium garden comes with landscaped water features, green walls and cascading planting. Outdoor terraces house leisure offerings, and a blend of food court and premium dining are located in box-like structures facing the mountains.
“Paradise Center is a true lifestyle centre for Sofia in that it offers incredible retail and leisure options within a striking and inviting environment. The centre will reflect the essence of Sofia and provide a memorable place where people can spend time at all hours of the day,” said Kenneth Christian, director, RTKL.
Upon completion, Paradise Center will provide 22,000 square metres of leisure, 60,500 square metres of retail and more than 240 shops. RTKL, a subsidiary of ARCADIS, has been working with local architects Proarch and Planning Architectural Studio on the scheme since October 2009.
