San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Expands

The expansion of San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) finally breaks ground.

Designed by Snøhetta, the new extension will double the gallery’s exhibition and education space, while also adding 12,000m2 of indoor and outdoor gallery space, and 1,000m2 of public space.

The new design will feature a glass-fronted gallery, a double height box on fourth floor for live art, film screenings and special events, a living wall of native California plants on the third floor and a terrace that offers panoramic views of the city on the seventh floor.

The new building will be 15 metres taller than the existing SFMOMA, which was created by Swiss architect Mario Botta in 1995.
