The Dubai Sports Complex is the running for a prize at the Emirates Glass LEAF Awards in London.
Running for best public building, Dubai Municipality’s complex was inaugurated by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, in October last year.
With a total capacity of 15,000 spectators, the flexible sports hall can hold aquatic events as well as dry sports such as basketball, volleyball, netball, badminton and exhibitions.
This year sponsored by Emirates Glass, the annual LEAF Awards honour excellence in international architecture. Last year’s overall winners were Populous in association with Boogertman + Partners for the Soccer City National Stadium in Johannesburg.
Previous winners include Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield, SOM, Steven Holl and Terry Farrell.
In addition to Dubai Municipality, this year’s candidates include schmidt hammer lassen architects, BDP, ingenhoven architects, Lan Architecture, and Sanjay Puri Architects.
The awards ceremony will take place at The Landmark, London, on Friday 16th September 2011.
