Snøhetta to design Banque Libano Francaise HQ in Beirut

Oslo-and New York-base architects Snøhetta has won a competition to design its first project in Lebanon, the headquarters of Banque Libano Francaise in Beirut.

The designers were selected with a design for a high-rise block with a checkerboard-patterned facade, that includes plant-covered terraces that are carved into the roof and the walls of the building.

The terraces aim to provide the bank staff access to outdoor spaces, which is hoped to become social hubs for the company. Additionally, the terraces have also been created as a symbol of sustainability.

Stepped seating areas, lounges set on platforms and private meeting areas contained within glass boxes make up parts of the interiors.

A flexible design has been created to  create a long-lasting headquarters for the bank with references to the bank’s history and values.

Private offices will be situated towards the top of the building while the ground level will host public services that are indicated by angles in the base of the tower.

The studio said that maintaining a high level of permeability at street level was an essential element for the project.
