SOM to design $318m LA Federal Courthouse

Beating three shortlisted architecture teams, SOM has been selected to design the new $318 million Los Angeles Federal Courthouse, housing the U.S District Court, Central District of California and the U.S Marshals Service.

According to the GSA: “The new 51, 097m2 building will be a sustainable, cost-effective, and a state-of-the-art court facility that includes security upgrades that are not available in the current 312 North Spring Street courthouse.”

“We are moving toward the groundbreaking of a critically needed facility that will resolve long-standing security and space issues,” Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-East Los Angeles) told the Los Angeles Times.

Construction is scheduled to start by the fall of 2013, with completion planned for 2016.
