Striking Hamburg metro design unveiled by gmp

U-Bahnhaltestelle Elbbrücken

Architect von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) has won first prize in the competition for the design of the Elbbrücken station in Hamburg‘s Hafencity, Germany.

The station will be the end of the line for the recently opened U4 metro and is located by the River Elbe.

In response to historic bridges, a striking steel structure consisting of curved steel girders supports the new station.

The crosswise layout of the frames results in a grid-type system and stabilises the steel arches.

A glass façade suspended on the inside protects the building from the elements.

The light-flooded station will allow vistas towards the Am Baakenhafen’ centre, the prominent tower blocks and the Elbe bridges.
