Tackling sustainability

The issue of sustainability within building design in the Middle East was a recurring theme throughout the DesignMENA event.

The opening panel discussion, chaired by interior design lecturer at Herriot Watt University’s School of the Built Environment Bruce Paget, focused on several aspects of the issue.

Those on stage agreed that the region lagged behind other parts of the world when it came to tackling the problem of carbon emissions and promoting eco-aware building projects.

One reason, they all agreed, was the cheap energy prices which exist across the UAE and MENA region.

Among the debate one major factor came to the fore: “Who is going to pay in the short term for the longer term benefits of sustainable design?”

The panel said that until greener regulations are accompanied by financial incentives – or failing to comply with them resulting in fines – many companies will not take the issue on board.
