Tadao Ando’s New York industrial-style apartment block

Japanese architect Tadao Ando has unveiled designs for his first building in New York City – a seven-storey apartment block in the area known as Nolita – “North of Little Italy”.

Proposed for a site where Kenmare and Elizabeth Streets meet, the 3,000m2 structure is designed to “embrace the industrial character of the area”.

It will be constructed using concrete, galvanised steel and large expanses of glazing and will accommodate eight residences, with between two and five bedrooms.

Ando will also create a large rooftop terrace, featuring a shallow reflective pool.
