Tributes paid to Canadian architect Bing Thom

Tributes have been paid to Bing Thom, one of Canada’s leading architects, who has died at the age of 75,

He suffered a brain aneurysm while on a recent trip to Hong Kong and passed away with his wife of more than 50 years by his side

Thom was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Canada as a child. He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from UBC and his Master of Architecture degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

He began his career in the offices of Arthur Erickson before starting his own firm in 1982. His company worked on numerous projects around the world including Canada’s Pavilion at Expo ’92 in Seville, Spain to the Arena Stage Theatre in Washington, DC.

Venelin Kokalov, his colleague at Bing Thom Architects, said: “I have been truly blessed to have been able to collaborate with Bing over the last two decades.

“Under his mentorship, I grew not just as a designed but also, through his example, as a leader. Bing has made by transition to Principal-in-Charge feasible and I am committed to carrying Bing’s dreams and vision into the future.”
