Trump golf project on course

Akoya by DAMAC

Work on the Trump International Golf Course in Dubai, is on schedule with designer Gil Hanse saying two holes are now completed.

The par 71, 18-hole championship-standard course is part of a development by DAMAC called Akoya which features residential properties surrounding the sports facility.

Hanse, who re-designed the “Blue Monster” at Trump National Doral, Miami, has also been commissioned to design the course for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Property mogul Donald Trump called Gil “one of the most sought after golf course designers in the world.”

He said: “We are confident he can bring his unique perspective and expertise to want will soon become the greatest golf course in the region.”

The project, along Umm Sequium Road, is Trump’s first in the Middle East.

Hanse said he wanted to use the local terrain to challenge golfers and “get them thinking”.

He said: “Since the announcement in May last year, we have been able to get straight on to the site and already the driving range and holes 10 and 11 are grassed, one lake is filled and shaping work is well underway on holes two through to six.

“From a distance I have been delighted with the way the course is coming along, and I am very excited to get back with the guys and help to personally shape this special course – I believe it will prove to be a fair challenge for players of all levels.

“We want to create something using the landscape and it’s been fun.”

Akoya, which was launched by Damac last April, includes mansions, villas, luxury apartments and a retail centre all surrounding the golf course.
