Mitra Khoubrou, co-founder of UAE-based research and project management consultancy Pink Tank, has been appointed as a jury member for the upcoming Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, judging contributions from participating countries.
The event is directed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and has its theme “Absorbing Modernity: 1914-2014”
It will also include “Elements of Architecture”, an exhibition that studies the evolution of 12 fundamental elements of buildings – from the staircase, to the door, the window or the elevator among other features.
The third component, called Monditalia, illustrates various dimensions of Italy through exhibitions and a series of theatrical productions.
The UAE will be participating for the first time in the Architecture Biennale. Commissioned by the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation, the UAE Pavilion will focus on the modern architecture of the 1970s and 1980s and how architectural traditions impact on the current cultural identity of the country.
Khoubrou said: “I hope to bring attention to these elements of architecture that reveal how cities in our region are evolving. There is a global conversation around modernity and urban identity and I feel like our region is invested with the future of that conversation.”
