Underwater bridge proposed for Amsterdam

Amsterdam bridge

A team of Spanish architects won a competition to design a canal bridge in Amsterdam, which enables pedestrians to cross underwater.

The bridge also contains a more traditional section over the water, as well as cafe space, a bicycle repair shop and spaces for toilets and administration offices.

Cyclists and wheelchair users are directed to the over-water path, which offers a gentler slope.

The structure of the bridge uses simple steel latticing and the architects specified recycled materials from shipyards.

Locally-sourced wood would line the interior spaces.
