Aviation expert Richard Spencer has joined Woods Bagot as Design Director – Aviation, following the recent win of the second stage of the International Terminal expansion at Perth Airport. This is the firm’s third airport win in the year.

Spencer has worked on the design and delivery of aviation projects such as the Passenger Transport Interchange at Heathrow’s Terminal 5, Delhi International Airport Terminal 3, Cork Airport, Ireland, and the master plan for a new airport for Lisbon, Portugal.

“Airports are an essential piece of infrastructure that today, not only act as gateway to major cities, but also form part of the commercial precinct and urban fabric of our metropolis,” said  Spencer.

“The design of airport infrastructure has drastically changed and diversified to keep ahead of the demands of globalisation, and the future success of the aviation industry lies in understanding and delivering on the ‘airport-city’ concept,” he added.

Award winning architect Mark Mitcheson-Low also moved to Australia, as chairman – Regional Executive Australia, after having worked on projects such as Baku International Airport and Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Designing an airport as destination is now creating commercial opportunities but also creates a need to make use of land use management and transportation methods to reduce major issues such as noise and carbon footprint.

With a growing portfolio, Woods Bagot expects to make announcements for more hires soon.
