Zaha Hadid Architects has revealed more details of the Opus hotel and residential project currently under construction in Dubai.

Speaking today (Wednesday) associate director Christos Passas said the design marks a “new maturity” for architecture in the city.

The project was first unveiled in 2005 but was put on hold during the economic recession.

However it is now underway and a completion date of late 2016 has been scheduled.

“The Opus design has stood the test of time,” said Passas.

“It will be a landmark for Dubai, bringing a new architectural maturity to the city. When it was first proposed the area around Business Bay where it is being built was largely desert. Now it is thriving and we believe this stylistically unique commercial masterpiece will be well known around the world and highlight the city even further.”

The building includes a hotel, dining venues and residential apartments – but its main feature is a central “void”.

“We started off with two towers but fused them and included a central space” said Passas. “This is as important as the building itself – showing presence and absence and light and dark.”
