Capital Gate bags two Cityscape awards

Abu Dhabi’s Capital Gate, the world’s most inclined structure, picked up a brace of accolades at the Cityscape Awards for Architecture in Emerging Markets 2011.

Designed by RMJM for ADNEC, the 160m mixed-use tower claimed first prize in the categories of ‘Commercial/Mixed use Future’ and the most prestigious prize, ‘Overall Project of the Year’.

The striking tower features an 18 degree lean and is expected to be completed this year. It will house the five-star ‘Hyatt Capital Gate’ hotel, as well as approximately 15,000m2 of office space.

Jonathan Knight, RMJM Middle East Design Principal, said: “The complex tower provides Abu Dhabi with a signature building that highlights the city’s growth and progression.”

Dubai Municipality was another nominee that walked away with two awards. The municipality was lauded for the Traditional Suq in Shindagha in the Tourism, Travel & Transport – Built category and the restoration of Hatta Mosque in the Cultural Heritage category.

Fusionopolis 4 by Aedas was successful in the Commercial/ Mixed Use Future category. Aedas’ design for the regional headquarters of LucasFilm in Singapore is dubbed ‘the Sandcrawler’ due to its similarity with the famous vehicles in the Star Wars movies.

The award winners were announced during a gala ceremony in Madinat Jumeirah on Tuesday 27th September.
