Architect Andrea Maffei has revealed his design for the Italian pavilion, which will be exhibited at the Milan Expo in 2015.
Taking inspiration from Italy’s multifaceted culture, the four storey structure is composed of layered spaces that vary in degrees of openness as well as form, material and colour.
The ever-present idea of the piazza in the Italian city is recreated on the ground level while Renaissance organisation and geometric shapes make the first level.
Echoing the Baroque period through undulating forms, the second level employs a white colour palette reminiscent of marble.
Italian agrarian and gardening culture is revealed through the tree-like structure and gardens in the roof level of the pavilion.
