The Swiss Re Headquarters, nicknamed ‘The Gherkin,’ designed by Foster + Partners has been selected by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) to receive the first 10 Year Award.
CTBUH describes that the iconic building in the UK “cleared the way for a new generation of tall buildings in London and beyond. Ten years on, its tapering form and diagonal bracing structure afford numerous benefits: programmatic flexibility, naturally ventilated internal social spaces that provide user comfort while reducing energy demand, and ample, protected public space at the ground level.”
This is the CTBUH’s first year presenting such an award, its main purpose being to promote the architectural industry to be performance against design intent driven. The new award allows buildings that have completed a decade to be re-acknowledged among a steady development of modern architecture worldwide. It recognizes proven value and performance, across one or more of a wide range of criteria, over a period of at least 10 years.
