Opinion: Dubai is the centre of the design universe

It’s not an exaggeration when people say that Dubai moves twice as fast as the rest of the world. We’re already in the second month of 2018, and I’ve now been in this wonderful city for five months. Having recently moved from Singapore, a tiny island state I call home, I quickly found myself caught up in a highly-charged design movement that seems to have gripped the entire region.

As one of the most cosmopolitan melting pots in the world, there isn’t a better time and place than Dubai and Commercial Interior Design magazine to be a part of this design revolution. The phenomenal growth of the industry is not only evident from the number of high profile projects that are being undertaken, but also from the fact that a number of international design studios and brands are boosting their presence in the region with the launch of bigger studios and showrooms.

Dubai Design District, which aims to be the premier destination for creatives, has recently welcomed a host of well-known firms to the neighbourhood. From names such as Grimshaw Architects to Living Divani and Driade, the precinct is setting new standards for design professionals with a world-class infrastructure.

Speaking of designers, our cover story in the February issue features Chris Barnes, who has been designing meaningful interior spaces in the region for the past 20 years. To maintain long-term success in a place like Dubai is no mean feat, considering the place is brimming with so much talent, and competition is tough.

Talking about the local design community always gets me excited and I look forward to meeting you at various design events, not to mention the CID Awards, the event of the year for industry professionals. The nomination process will open later this month, so do look out for further details in CID, as well as on DesignMENA.com.

I’m delighted to embark on a journey into the region’s interior design scene and bring you more thought-provoking stories, a bar that has already been set high by my predecessors. I hope you’ll join me on this quest for good design that defines and shapes our thought process.
